Highlighting Mens Health and Workplace Wellbeing

For many years now, November has seen men across the world growing their facial hair for Movember to campaign for men’s health. Movember focuses on making a difference in mental health, suicide prevention, and prostate and testicular cancer through raising awareness and fundraising. Health promotion and education for men will not only help to highlight the issues surrounding mens health, but would also lead to an improvement in mens standard of living and workplace wellbeing.

On average, men die 4.5 years earlier than women. Across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 69% of all suicides. A report by the World Health Organisation noted the workplace as a key setting in which to promote men’s health. Read more about their findings and recommendations here.

Though health surveillance programmes are intended to keep a business compliant, they can also help the individual being seen on a personal level. Any underlying health issues can be identified through the range of health checks carried out, including high blood pressure or deterioration in vision. The appointment also provides employees with time to talk about any concerns they may have, some taking the opportunity to discuss their mental health. Men are significantly less likely than women to seek help from their GP or a pharmacy, so statutory health assessments give employees a key chance to talk to a health professional.

Sarsen Health are also happy to offer health promotion programmes – a further opportunity to carry out health checks and provide employees with a range of health information. These assessments are usually offered to the whole organisation, rather than only those requiring health surveillance. Our qualified and experienced team are always happy to help, be it through smoking cessation referrals or dietary and lifestyle advice.
